Here I list some of the reasons and criteria for the rankings I give here on TheBlueTapeBlog. All these rankings are based on my personal perspective.
An Instant classic. I’m likely to give this grade out if I strongly feel the film will be distinctly remembered 20 or 30 years from its release.
Examples : The Godfather, The Hurt Locker, The Shawshank Redemption, Fight Club, Star Wars
An excellent film, absolutely enjoyable from beginning to end. These films are hitting on so many different cylinders that easy arguments can be made that it’ll be a classic. Critics and Audiences will universally love this film.
Examples : Inception, The Raid, Good Will Hunting, Scarface
A Great film. This kind of film has to be clearly above average in a few different categories including and not limited too : Screenplay, Cinematography, Acting, Special Effects, Dramatic Effect & Tone etc.
Example : The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Gattaca, Nightmare on Elm Street, Fast Five, Total Recall
Good/Average film. This kind of film succeeds in maintaining your attention and being entertaining for a majority of its run time. These films are normally “safe”, choosing to stick with familiar themes and not pushing any real envelopes.
Examples : Wanted, The Transporter, Resident Evil, Starship Troopers
A bad film, not to be disguised as anything but bad. However, has some form of redeeming quality to make it watchable. A single character performance, a unique premise or its ability to be adapted to a drinking game.
Examples : Sharknado, Dude Where’s My Car
Absolutely awful film. No redeeming qualities what so ever. If your heat cuts off, and you used one of these films as material to burn for a fire. It wouldn’t succeed in keeping you warm.
Examples : Good Luck Chuck, Glitter, R.I.P.D
I find TV shows a lot harder to rank than films. Sometimes shows are only good for half of its life span and can wildly differ from season to season. So I wont be giving them straight forward rankings.
If water coolers were still a thing, this is a show you need to watch to even get close to them. Being consistently good is probably the most important aspect to being “must watch”. A show must be over in its entirety or at least 4 seasons deep to get this rating from me. It’s two easy for a show to go from flying high to crash landing.
Examples : Senfield , The Sopranos, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Friends
These are show that are consistently good. Probably capable of being “Must Watch”, but It hasn’t finished or met the minimum season requirements.
Examples : Dexter, Orange is the new black, Arrow, Stargate SG-1, How I met your mother
This is for a show that hangs out in the average kind of space. You’ll get some enjoyment out of the this show. I’m likely not compelled to keep watching it or go back and re-watch any episodes.
Examples : Heroes, American Dad, America Funniest Home Videos, CSI
This is the show your afraid to admit you watch. It’s probably a bad show when it’s all said and done, but you don’t care.
Examples : The real housewives of __, Keeping up with the Kardashians, Flavor of Love, Maury
